Surakarta, March 25, 2025 – Eco Bhinneka Surakarta hosted a special event that combined an iftar gathering with a discussion on the theme “Women and the Environment.” The event, held at a café in Surakarta, was attended by 29 participants, including interfaith leaders and individuals of various ages and genders. This event was not only a moment for breaking fast together but also an effort to convey the important message that environmental issues are a shared responsibility, regardless of religious or belief backgrounds.
According to Uswatun Hasanah, Regional Staff of Eco Bhinneka Surakarta, the event aimed to raise public awareness in Surakarta about the importance of environmental preservation, as well as highlight the fundamental role of women in environmental conservation. “This event sparks the people of Surakarta to realize the importance of protecting the environment and the fundamental role of women in this effort,” she said.
Through this discussion, Uswatun added, it is hoped that the participants would gain a deeper understanding of how women and young people are often victims of environmental degradation, yet they are also the most vulnerable and impacted groups. Therefore, continuous advocacy to both the government and society is essential to reduce these impacts.

The event also featured Titik Eka Sasanti, a speaker from Yayasan Gita Pertiwi, who led the discussion on the role of women in environmental issues. “Women must be the most environmentally aware group because they are often blamed when environmental problems arise, especially waste,” said Titik.
Rosa Indah Kurnianingsih, an educator at Tarakanita, added, “Women, whether as mothers, wives, or other family members, play a crucial role in instilling environmental awareness and making decisions within the household.” This reflects the significant role of women not only outside the home but also in the domestic sphere, educating the next generation about the importance of preserving nature.

This event was not just about breaking fast together, but also a valuable opportunity to strengthen bonds and broaden perspectives on the role of women in environmental issues. As an alternative form of outreach, the event encouraged the people of Surakarta to become more concerned about environmental sustainability, promoting universal human values regardless of religion, race, or gender.
