Depok — Eco Bhinneka Muhammadiyah once again held a waste management gathering in the Bedahan area of Depok on Saturday, May 24, 2025. The event took place at TK & PG Aisyiyah Bustanul Athfal 9 Sukmajaya Depok. The agenda focused on sharing best practices and challenges in waste management through the Shadaqah Sampah (Waste Charity) Movement initiated by the Regional Board of ‘Aisyiyah (PDA) Depok, West Java.

The event was attended by 15 participants representing three shadaqah sampah branches in the Bedahan area: PCA Sukmajaya, PCA Bojongsari, PCA Bedahan, and PCA North Sawangan, along with the Eco Bhinneka Muhammadiyah team and other supporting partners.

This gathering served as a follow-up to the previous two events and provided a space for reflection, sharing of best practices, and planning collaborative steps for future community-based waste management efforts.

Siti Wastiyah, Chair of the Environmental and Disaster Management Agency (LLHPB) of PDA Depok, expressed her hope that this initiative would benefit not only ‘Aisyiyah but also the wider Depok community. “Waste is a major concern for the new mayor, and we hope to establish collaborations to address this issue. Waste is a serious problem—by 2045, it is projected that no landfill sites will be available. Therefore, waste management must start at home,” she stated.

Hening Parlan, Director of Eco Bhinneka Muhammadiyah, added that this gathering laid the foundation for growing solidarity and concrete action. “Eco Bhinneka is a program under Muhammadiyah, driven by youth focused on peacebuilding. We aim to present both social and economic solutions through waste management. Even waste products, including food waste, can have high economic value if managed seriously and systematically,” she explained.

She emphasized that Eco Bhinneka Muhammadiyah is committed to encouraging the women of ‘Aisyiyah Depok to grow and take action together. “Going forward, we hope to expand our network and synergy with the local government,” Hening added.

Meanwhile, Eka Wijayanti, a representative of the program’s partners, stated that the experiences and insights gained from this initiative are valuable and can inspire other regions. “I hope through these discussions we can strengthen each other and build a sustainable waste management movement,” she said.

Community-based waste management is a key approach to strengthening networks and promoting sustainable living practices. Through this model, community-run waste banks are not only tools for waste processing but also platforms for fostering inter-community relationships.

During the sharing session, various best practices from waste banks in Bedahan were presented, including used cooking oil collection, maggot farming, textile recycling, eco-enzyme soap production, and creating economically valuable products from waste. Despite facing challenges such as administrative recordkeeping and product distribution, participants remained optimistic that with mutual cooperation and consistency, the movement would continue to grow.

Future steps will focus on assessing the potential of each ‘Aisyiyah branch, providing administrative training, and expanding networks with other waste management groups. Eco Bhinneka Muhammadiyah is committed to continuously supporting and facilitating communities so that the shadaqah sampah movement can grow stronger and more sustainable. This program aims not only to benefit the environment but also to strengthen the local economy and social solidarity.
